Nearly 80 percent of meat and dairy products from farm animals tested by scientists contain microplastics. Researchers from the Free University (VU) found plastic in the meat, blood and milk of cows and pigs.
The VU conducted a test on behalf of the Plastic Soup Foundation. Seven of the eight beef samples tested were found to contain particles of plastic, and five of the eight pork samples did as well. In 18 of the 25 milk samples, the researchers also found plastic. Small amounts of plastic were also found in the blood of the animals examined: in 12 cows and 12 pigs.
The plastic could possibly have gotten into the animals through plastic in the feed. The researchers analyzed twelve samples of feed pellets and shredded feed, all samples were found to contain plastic.
The Plastic Soup Foundation has started a petition calling on Minister Henk Staghouwer (Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality) to assure consumers that the Dutch food chain is plastic-free.
